MBO tonic for Greenall's

The new owner of G&J Greenall, the country's oldest gin producer, today said it plans to invest in buying more brands and grow the firm into an international spirits group.

Warrington-based Greenalls was sold yesterday for £7.5m to a management team led by chief executive Christian Rose, who saved the business from collapse three years ago and called the deal “a huge opportunity for expansion”.

The company, which celebrates its 250th anniversary this year, was sold by De Vere Group as it looks to focus on its core hotel and leisure business.

The MBO team was backed by a new private equity vehicle led by Enzo Visone, the former chief executive of Italian beverage group Gruppo Campari, and ex-investment banker Warren Scott.

Mr Rose said: “Initially, the business will carry on with the strategy that is in place to take it global. Beyond that, we are looking for acquisitions across the spirits portfolio.

“Enzo has backing from some very high-wealth individuals who want to be part of a major international spirits business.”

Mr Rose added: “There has been some uncertainty over whether someone could buy the business and break it up, but there is an even bigger spring in the step of the team here now that there is total clarity about the future of the business.

“We are looking to grow organically and diversify. There is great belief in Greenalls as a production facility and in our heritage and expertise.”

Mr Rose joined Greenalls in 2008 at a time when the company was loss-making and he spearheaded a restructuring that saw it return to profit the following year.

The company distils gin and vodka under its own brands and for clients including Bombay Sapphire and supermarkets Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Waitrose. It had revenues of £50m during 2010.

It employs more that more than 120 people at its headquarters and distillery in Birchwood, which has been its home since a catastrophic fire destroyed its previous premises in 2005.

Greenalls launched its Bloom gin brand in the US last month and a joint venture to launch Greenalls in India is planned within the next six months.

A third production line was installed at its bottling plant in 2010, which is on schedule to pay for itself within its first year.

De Vere chairman Andrew Coppel said: “We decided to sell because we have been seeking to dispose of our non-core business.

“The new owners are going to invest in the business and look forward to growing it.
