Kern County, southern San Joaquin Valley
CARP DERBY: The annual Bob's Bait month-long August carp derby kicked off Monday this week. The new format has a $1 pre-entry fee, and the biggest catfish weighed in during August wins the $100 prize from Bob's, plus all the entry fee money from everyone entered. Only fresh fish can be weighed in and no weighing in of fish the same day as entering derby. The July catfish derby winner was Jeff Prickett, Bakersfield, with a 24-pound catfish caught on shad at Buena Vista. He won more than $300.
LAKE ISABELLA: The catfish bite is good on shad and clams in most coves with most in the 1-8 to three-pound range, but some to six or seven pounds. The bluegill bite is good on crickets and wax worms. The crappie bite is slow with the fish very scattered showing for boat and float tube anglers, mostly in the South Fork arm on live shiners. The trout action is still fair to good over much of the lake with the fish showing in both arms and at the dam, but the South Fork arm has been particularly good. Fewer limits this week, but the bite is still decent and some fish are topping four pounds. Largemouth bass have still been spotty with only a few showing on Senkos and cranks, but like the crappie, they are scattered. Water flows are finally dropping in the forks of the Kern and the lake level has peaked and is dropping.
KERN RIVER: Upper Kern River flows continue to drop (less than 1,000 cfs this week), and the river is much more fishable. The action has been very good with lots of 18 to 20-inch fish on crickets, salmon eggs and nightcrawlers. Lower river has flowing at 3,000 cfs and is still tough.
AQUEDUCT NEAR TAFT: Striped bass bite remains good with a lot of 4- to 6-pound fish reported. Catfish bite slowed.
MILL CREEK PARK: The catfish bite has been fair to good. Most cats 1-3 pounds. Few bass.
HART PARK LAKE: Bluegill bite pretty good on worms, crickets, wax worms and meal worms. Carp fair on dough baits. Some catfish and bass showing.
TRUXTUN LAKE: Bluegill and carp bites good. The bass action is slow to fair, and most bass are small.
RIVER WALK PARK: The bluegill bite is good on small worms, crickets, meal worms and wax worms. Some bass. Also more carp showing.
MING LAKE: The bluegill bite is good on worms, wax worms and crickets. Carp also improving. Bass bite slow to fair.
BUENA VISTA LAKES: Catfish bite fair to good, mostly 2-4 pounders. Bluegill also good. Crappie very slow.

Trout action in the Sierra Nevada remains fair to good overall, with the June Lake loop (especially Silver), Virgina Lakes, and Bridgeport Reservoir all top bets. Other good bets include Twin Lakes (Bridgeport), South Lake and the South Fork of Bishop
