Syfy Cancels 'Eureka:' This Time For Real
Keep moving. Nothing to see here. No cancellation here.
Oh wait, did you say "Eureka"? Oh yeah ... that show is cancelled.
Just days after it downplayed a reported cancellation after what was supposed to be a six-episode sixth season, Syfy has turned around and actually outright cancelled "Eureka," bringing an end to what started a new era for the cable channel, and led to such other hits like "Warehouse 13."
"After painstaking consideration, we have had to make the difficult business decision to not order a Season 6 of 'Eureka,'" the network said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter .
No official reason was given as to why the shortened sixth season was axed. However, Airlock Alpha had received two reports over the last few days that executive producer Jaime Paglia -- a co-creator of the show -- was surprised about the shortened order, and was told that those final episodes were meant to give him the latitude to wrap the series. Whether Paglia resisted a wrap-up in such a way is not clear.
Fans for "Eureka" will likely be more incensed than they were already, and it marks yet another controversial (and botched) cancellation announcement. Syfy drew the ire of some of its core fanbase earlier this year when it abruptly pulled the plug on both "Caprica" and "Stargate: Universe," the former -- a "Battlestar Galactica" spinoff -- actually being pulled from the schedule, and not aired until after its DVD release.
To announce a shortened season, to downplay reports of a cancellation, and then to take all of it away -- the reaction from "Eureka" fans is not going to be pretty.
Syfy, however, did make it clear that this is not the end of "Eureka." There are still some more episodes to come, including a Christmas episode in December, and 12 more episodes already ordered to complete the fifth season.
"The 2012 episodes are some of the best we've seen, and will bring this great series to a satisfying end," the Syfy statement said. "We thank the fans for their support of this show, and know they will enjoy its final season in 2012."
Absent from the announcement is any talk about a future for the show, like whether there will be a spinoff or a direct-to-DVD movie -- both unlikely at this point.
It seems that Syfy was caught by surprise with the leaking of the show's end last week, first reported by Deadline.com, and had to recover to avoid a negative fan storm. Whether the move they made -- confirming six more episodes and a chance for more -- was the right one, Syfy will find out in the coming days.
