Ways With Words festival celebrates good food

Luard's talk was about how she had spent a year planting, picking and cooking while roaming through the Welsh countryside and in her tak she rambled pleasantly through a host of subjects: She emphasised how important it is for children to have the natural smells of cooking and then talked about how in times of trouble people often go back to their 'roots' with cooking in terms of food. In Mexico, she said, following recent economic and health problems, there has been a resurgence of cooking ancient Aztec recipes.

There were six 'Food' events in all and the menu was pretty varied and thought-provoking.

During Signe Johansen's talk on the delights of Scandinavian cooking, she told us about her time working at Hester Blumenthal's Fat Duck restaurant. She said: "He was working on a flambe ice cream. The trick being to light it but stop it melting."

Josceline Dimbleby talked about her time travelling the world and sampling different cuisines. Dimbleby, the step-daughter of a diplomat, said that while living abroad with diplomats, she always use to spend her time in the kitchen with the servants watching how they cooked the local dishes because that provided the essential authenticity that is the key to successful food.

The best speaker's name of the festival went to Willie Harcourt-Cooze, whose talk about his book 'Willie's Chocolate Bible' had most people heading straight for the confectionery stalls.

Food journalist Tracey Lawson spent a year in the Italian village of Campodimele - in Latina, in the Lazio region - to examine how the diet of the locals and their lifestyle is helping them live longer. It was claimed that recently there were eight people over a hundred year's of age in this small village. The average age people live to there is 95.

They eat local, healthy produce which eliminates chemicals (all the children learn how to bottle the fresh tomato sauce, 300 litres at a time) and the locals have a life of continuous activity.

Residents are always outdoors and active on the land. Lawson said: "They don't go to gyms or have to run on tarmac but they live a life of consistent exercise, which means you see women in their seventies and eighties still climbing up olive trees."

Presumably they were able to climb down too.

One man of 103, who is the oldest present inhabitant of Campodimele, told Lawson that he exercised regularly but had also eaten the same type of minestrone soup every day for more than a century.

What does it meant to be human? What is reality? What are the moral issues we face when creating artificial humans? These are the questions Ridley Scott seeks to answer in his film Blade Runner. As technology and science advances, we see human tries to act like god in many ways, such as creating artificial humans and animals; yet, in such action, man also encounters many consequences. In addition, questions relating to the meaning of life, the definition of human race, and the moral issues concerning creating artificial humans are also raised. The story begins in postmodern Los Angeles with its permanent dark cloud of smog, its advertising billboards hundreds of feet high, its unimaginable skyscrapers tower over streets, and its street poverty living side by side with incredible wealth, in 01. Rick Deckard, a main character, is a retired ¡§Blade Runner,¡¨ whose task is to terminate the replicants¡Xartificial humans, indistinguishable from real human besides the fact that they have no memories and only have four-year lifespans. Though created as humans, replicants are not treated as humans; therefore, this mission is called ¡§retirement¡¨ instead of execution. In the midst of this mission, the only replicants remain are Leon, Roy, Zhora, Pris, and Rachael. In the film, the technological advancement in the future world enables us to have the opportunity in creating many things, even to the extent of creating artificial life; hence, by creating human, man is analogous in playing god¡¦s role. For example, Tyrell and Sebastian artificially create the replicants through genetic engineering.
