'America's Got Talent,' Week 11, Night 1: TV Recap

After the final 12 acts from the competition showed their talents last week, the producers of “America’s Got Talent” gave them a few weeks of relief – if also a few more competitors – with a group of auditions culled from YouTube performers. As host Nick Cannon put it, “12 acts will go from online to on stage,” and much like the folks who have been around since the beginning, they’ll win or lose based on America’s votes, although the judges will get first crack at critiquing their routines.

After Cannon sparred with judge Piers Morgan, who’s become something of a curmudgeon over the past several weeks, he introduced the first act of the night, a clogging group named TNC Elite. The Charlotte, NC troupe delivered an energetic performance to the tune of Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling,” about which Morgan said later, “that wasn’t bad, actually.” Judge Sharon Osbourne suggested that “when you clogged without the music, I thought it was better,” but Cannon offered them some encouragement: “I think people are going to be clogging up in the club,” he said.

Illusionist Brett Daniels followed after a commercial break, and his Marilyn Monroe-themed routine was met with muted enthusiasm from the judges. “I like the premise, but the presentation was a bit slow,” Osbourne said. Morgan was similarly unexcited about Gabe Rocks, an act featuring an English bulldog that peed on a cardboard cutout of Piers, but Osbourne and Mandel delighted in championing the canine contestant: Mandel gushed, “Gabe is going to steal America’s heart.”

A parkour act called Aeon was next, and despite the uniqueness of their talent, the performance was poorly choreographed, featuring backup dancers that distracted viewers from watching the actual stunt work the group did. Morgan called the routine “poorly choreographed and coordinated,” while Mandel described it as “edgy and original and I like what you do.” The stage then emptied to make room for Breena Bell, a pre-teen dancer who smiled endlessly as she danced to Katrina and the Waves’s “Walking on Sunshine.” Morgan didn’t seem especially impressed by her, but he offered her some constructive advice: “you’re a very good gymnast, and you should be looking to enter the Olympics,” he said. “Keep practicing, and come back when you’re older and stronger,” Mandel added.

YouTube sensation Kevin Colis then took the stage to perform Bruno Mars’s “Lazy Song,” but despite a relatively generic performance, both Morgan and Osbourne indicated that he had a real shot in the competition. Osbourne said, “ You have a really strong voice, and considering you’ve never done this before, it was really good.” The judges were unanimous, however, in their praise for Beth Ann Robinson, a dancer who gave a dexterous solo performance to Rob Dougan’s “Clubbed to Death.” “It was phenomenal to watch,” Mandel cheered. “I believe you have a place here.

“It’s about looking like an individual.” Ha. Are you fucking serious? Go to a fucking hot topic store and look at how the people dress then we’ll see who’s dressing like an individual. There is nothing different or unique about anyone in the goth scene. Its a scene, so everyone looks exactly the same to conform and be part of something. It’s too bad people are looked down upon for being themselves. (Or a “true individual”.)

i agree too. its not an over night thing. ive been facinated by the culture myself since i was 13. im 19 now and i do dress more like it. it cant happen over night BUT! it can start in someones life at anytime. instead of how to be a goth, there should be “what is goth”. then let the viewer process it out in his/her brain. so whoever is watching this to be goth DONT. BE YOURSELF.

I agree with alot of the comments saying that you don’t just wake up and say “I’m going to be goth today.” That just doesn’t happen. And when it does happen like that, thats where you get most of the population of fake goths that listen to Avenged Sevenfold and whatnot as opposed to Christian Death or Razed in Black [or whatever the fuck you wanna say]

Goth is a lifestyle that comes from a dark mind, a dark interest and not giving a fuck about judgements.
