DuneFest rocks the sand

The struggling economy caused this year’s lower attendance and vendor numbers, but for most attending DuneFest, a better time could not have been found anywhere. Perfect weather, good sand, quality food, helpful volunteers and controlled areas where alcohol could be consumed all worked together to make DuneFest a summer success in Winchester Bay. A year of planning and the help of volunteers is what makes DuneFest a success, according to Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce workers. This year, more than 200 volunteers wearing bright yellow T-shirt did everything from stuffing information packets and selling tickets to directing traffic, managing events, hosting campgrounds and helping the injured. Spread out across the DuneFest playground, the volunteers worked from sunrise to sunset to make sure everyone had a good time. Bev and Roy Stubbs, ATVers from Salem, came to help children be safe when riding ATVs. When Oregon developed its 4-H Youth Rider Endorsement Program through Oregon State University, Bev became a mover and shaker in the new program. She became the first master instructor and with the help of her husband, also an instructor, they guided children under 16 through the hands-on part of the program. Comment Policy
