Smart Living: Homelessness could be closer than you think

On any given night in America, more than 640,000 people experience homelessness.

Single mothers make up the fastest-growing group of homeless people in the country.

According to the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, in 2003, children under the age of 18 accounted for 39 percent of the homeless population and one-fourth of homeless people were between 25 and 34-years-old.

About 17 percent of homeless people are considered “chronically homeless.” (Source: Endhomelessness.org ) Inadequate income is a major reason for homelessness. A lack of affordable housing is the top cause of homelessness.

According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, declining wages have put housing out of reach for many workers. In each state, more than the minimum wage is required to afford a one or two bedroom apartment at fair market rent.

In the median state, a minimum-wage worker would have to work 89 hours each week just to afford a two-bedroom apartment.

“Spent” is an interactive game created by McKinney. It challenges users to manage their money, raise a child and make it through the month getting paid minimum wage.

The game was launched in February 2011 as collaboration between McKinney and Urban Ministries of Durham (UMD). Since launching, users from as far away as Brazil, Australia and Japan have participated in the games.

The game starts with the user losing their home and savings. The goal is to see if players can make it through the month on their last $1,000. Players face a series of difficult challenges that require them to make decisions about where to work or how far or how close to live to the city.

If they make it through the full month, they are asked if they would like to donate to UMD. If you’d like to provide meals to others who are living “spent,” you can donate $5 via the game’s website .

..14/03/2011 – Tsunami coastal Japan faces radiation, food shortage, water shortage, blackouts homelessness, hypothermia – Heartbreak. People queue for many hours for rationed fuel for their vehicles. Sop shelves lay empty as people panic buy to stock up. The tsunami warning was lifted today after reports that a 3 metre wave could strike. 3 smaller waves were observed and later the warning was lifted for now. It is still possible that further tsunamis could strike. Fuel Rods Melting in All 3 Reactors. Will post link in a moment. (AP:TOKYO) Japanese officials say the nuclear fuel rods appear to be melting inside all three of the most troubled nuclear reactors. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said Monday: “Although we cannot directly check it, it’s highly likely happening.” *Can’t find Washington Post link on US retreating. I will do a video shortly. Hawaii is the first State to receive radiation. Makes me wonder why the American media has not mentioned Hawaii while promoting the west coast as the first area to come under radiation exposure. Hawaii is the first and something tells me that what happens to Hawaii is a prelude to what happens when the 13 nuclear reactors within the New Madrid Fault Zone get destroyed. Anyway, all of this is tragic, but we better pay attention because we could soon have our own nuclear radiation problems.
