Highland Park teen's summer: camp counselor, Hollywood intern

It’s too bad for Highland Park resident Burt Chaikin that high school seniors have outgrown the “How I Spent My Summer Vacation” assignment, because he would have the makings for a grade-A paper.

Last month, he took a near two-week break from his camp counselor gig in Minoqua, Wis., to go to Hollywood to be an intern for Shawn Levy, director of the “Night at the Museum” films and “Date Night.”

If Chaikin’s own life were a movie, his introduction to Levy would make for a memorable “meet cute.” He was 9 years old and on a vacation over New Year’s with his family at a resort. He recognized Levy from a behind the scenes bonus feature on the DVD of his then-favorite movie, “Big Fat Liar,” Levy’s first feature film.

The families would run into each at the same resort over the next few years. When Chaikin was about 13, he recalled, Levy agreed to meet him for “question time,” as the boy inquired about the business, how scripts were made into movies, how directors choose projects and what a producer does.

“He answered them all,” Chaikin said in a phone interview from Camp Kawaga, where he returned following his Hollywood sojourn. “He didn’t talk down to me. Once, he said he was working on a movie with Tom Cruise and how cool it was because it was (bleeping) Tom Cruise.”

The two kept in touch. “Whenever he had a movie coming out, I would email him,” Chaikin said. Last year, Chaikin recruited Levy to contribute a short video greeting for an evening of short films produced by Highland Park High School students.

Chaikin’s love of movies grew out of his love for magic. “The Prestige,” the 2006 film about a rivalry between two magicians, kindled his interest in what he called “the magic of filmmaking.”

“Movies take you out of your real life,” he said. “It was the one industry that benefited during the Great Depression because people wanted an escape (from their troubles).”

The internship immersed Chaikin in the filmmaking process. He reported to work on the 20th Century Fox lot where Levy has his production company (his parents accompanied him on the trip). During that time, he was charged with reading The New York Times “front to back” to look for possible story ideas. His opinion was solicited on jokes (none of which can be repeated in a family newspaper, Chaikin laughed) for the upcoming R-rated Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn comedy “Neighborhood Watch,” which Levy’s production company is producing.
