A: Retailers offer such a dazzling array of kitchen gadgets and gizmos, it's easy to walk down the aisles and ask for whatever looks fun. Many of these items, however, will collect dust until they finally end up in a garage sale.
Beginning cooks should start with the basics. A set of quality knives (Henckels, Chicago Cutlery), cookware (Berndes, All Clad), refrigerator storage (Pyrex square glass you can reheat in and Rubbermaid Lock-Its for both refrigerated and frozen foods), dry storage canisters (Oxo Pop Storage), baking dishes (Pyrex 9-inch pie plate, 1½-quart casserole and 9x13-inch pan) and baking pans (Nordic Ware) and gadgets (huge fan of Oxo) will get you going.
Use your gift cards to purchase a set of sturdy nested stainless steel mixing bowls, measuring spoons and cups (stainless dry measure, Pyrex liquid measure), dishwasher-safe plastic cutting boards (large and small), a pasta strainer and a wire strainer you can also use to sift dry ingredients.
Because many newlyweds are apartment dwellers, I hesitate to recommend countertop appliances when space is dear. If you have the room and are really committed to becoming a good cook, I recommend a 5-quart KitchenAid stand mixer and 9-cup Cuisinart food processor.
Even in an apartment you'll get lots of use out of a good toaster oven (Hamilton Beach Toastation rates well). Pass on the traditional blender; a Cuisinart immersion "stick" blender is smaller, more versatile and easier to clean.
Hope this is helpful. With the topic on the table, so to speak, I'm wondering how many of you former brides still have a piece of cookware or kitchen gadget you received as a wedding gift that you still use today? Let me know and if you'd like, send a photo to one of the addresses below.
Directions
1. In a medium saucepan over low heat, warm cream to 105 degrees. Remove from heat and stir in buttermilk.

The best souvenir I ever heard of was a giant wheel of cheese that my friend Era smuggled out of her native Albania. This was not just any cheese. It was 20 pounds of stinky, sheep-milk kashkaval, the hard cheese found throughout the Balkans.

I wasn't unhappy — there were cheese poboys and red beans and rice and whatnot to keep me happy. But I would see my girlfriend, Coco, eating mudbugs or erstas, as New Orleaneans call crawfish and oysters, and she would roll her eyes with delight,
