The solemnity of St Mary MacKillop

By: Elizabeth Harrington

THE Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments has approved a request from the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference that the liturgical observance of St Mary MacKillop on August 8 be raised to the level of a solemnity.

By having her feast day celebrated as the highest liturgical rank, the Church in Australia acknowledges that the story of and devotion to Mary MacKillop has a prominent place in the Catholic community and beyond.

A solemnity will mean that the Mass now includes the Gloria and Creed and three readings.

Texts for the feast are available on the website of The Liturgical Commission/Documents/National Documents, or go directly to http://www.litcom.net.au/documents/nationaldocuments/mackillop.php

The new first reading (sadly the reading from the book of Judith has been dropped) is 1 Kings 17:8-16 (The jar of meal shall not be spent).

The psalm has been changed from Psalm 31 with the response "Into your hands, O Lord, I entrust my spirit" to Psalm 63 with response "My soul clings to you; your right hand holds me fast".

The second reading (Colossians 3:12-17) and Gospel (Matthew 6:25-34) remain the same.

It is interesting to compare the texts we have been using with the revised versions:

Current Opening Prayer may strengthen us all in charity and faith.

As can be clearly seen in these examples, the liturgical books have unfortunately eliminated the universally and instantly recognised name MacKillop: she is now to be known as St Mary of the Cross.

On August 8 this year, and every year, parishes around Australia will conduct special Masses to celebrate the feast of this country's first saint.

"HEROIC" was one of the many ways St Mary of the Cross (MacKillop) was described 102 years after her death when worshippers packed St Stephen's Cathedral, Brisbane, on her first solemnity on Monday, August 8. Canonised in Rome on October 17 last year,

Perhaps this was the same image carried in nocturnal procession on the eve of the feast of the Dormition, now the solemnity of the Assumption, alluded to in the Liber Pontificalis. Described in another source, on the eve of the Dormition of Our Lady,

What Are Holy Days of Obligation? « For Your Marriage

One of the things that makes the Roman Catholic Church distinct from other Christian denominations is that we have days throughout the year– in addition to Sundays– when we’re obligated to attend Mass.

The six Holy Days are:  Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception (December 8th), The Nativity of the Lord (Christmas), Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God (January 1st), Ascension of the Lord (the date moves with Easter), Solemnity of the Assumption (August 15th), and the Solemnity of All Saints (November 1st). Notice that Ash Wednesday isn’t on the list, even though it’s one of the busiest days of the year for most parishes.

There is a wrinkle. When the Assumption, All Saints, or the Solemnity of Mary falls on a Monday or Saturday, there is no Mass obligation. This year, for example, the Assumption falls on Monday, August 15, so there is no obligation to attend Mass, although Catholics are encouraged to celebrate this beautiful feast. The Immaculate Conception, as the Patronal Feast of the United States, is always a day of obligation, except when it falls on a Sunday, in which case it’s moved to the ninth, but without the obligation to attend Mass.

Finally, since 1992 the Feast of the Ascension is celebrated on the 7th Sunday of Easter in most, but not all, parts of the U.S.

Confused? Check the website or bulletin of your local parish when a Holy Day is approaching.
