Go Green: Choosing the Right Mower
My husband asked for a gas-powered lawnmower when we moved into our Del Ray home seven years ago. In consideration of the fact that we only have two small squares of grass in our front yard and a backyard covered entirely in brick, I found a gas-powered mower to be, well, excessive.
I suggested an electric mower, which was met with a grimace and a complicated explanation regarding outlets, extension cords and the need for more power. I gave up my quest for an eco-conscious, inexpensive lawnmower and every summer since, my husband has spent all of 15 minutes, once a week, cutting the grass.
If our gas-powered mower ever breaks down, I’ll use the opportunity to suggest we consider a greener version.
It doesn’t get much more environmentally friendly than a manual reel mower, as no engine means no exhaust. Perfect for small yards, a manual mower needs little upkeep outside of blade sharpening. Sure, your yard won’t be golf course perfect but a reel mower will get the job done with a little sweat equity.
Electric lawnmowers also produce no exhaust emissions and offer features a manual mower can’t match, such as bagging or mulching capabilities. Some electric models are now cordless, offering greater convenience by eliminating the pesky extension cord. Electric mowers work best on shorter grass–grass too tall or thick will overwhelm the machine.
It’s worth noting that gas-powered mowers have also improved over the years to offer fewer emissions while running with greater efficiency. Gas mowers still require regular maintenance and typically cost twice the amount of electric versions.

Product was delivered in less than one week. We uncrated it and it was just about ready to go. We love it. It took just a little time to get used to learning how to drive it, but after that it was great. We’ve four acres of ground, and bought it mainly because it elimated all the triming around pine trees, etc. One word of caution. We’ve a slope and unless the grass is completly dry don’t try to take it down a hill because they’ll slide and are next to impossible to stop. All in all I’ll say we’re more than pleased, and we’re glad we made the purchase.
