Music festival shaping up

The Fire 'n' Water Music Festival is right around the corner and organizers are working hard to make it a weekend to remember.

With an endless lineup of performances drifting from five different stages hour by hour from morning to night, this is one event that promises to deliver.

Main stage acts such as the Crooked Brothers, Oh My Darling, and the Dusty Roads Band will bring you the sound, rhythm and style of the prairie places you call home.

"I think we have sort of a weird way of looking at things," festival president Sheldon Sveinson says. "We ignore our own artists and idolize people from far away and the farther away they are, the more they are appreciated."

Because local artists live in our culture, Sveinson explains, their music expresses what we can most identify with.

"A lot of the performers (that will be at the festival), when they leave the province, are headlining because they really are that incredibly good. Why can't we recognize that and give them their due, a local audience?"

Sveinson compares the treatment of local artists to the wendigo of Algonquin legends. According to myth, a person turned into a wendigo when they resorted to cannibalism in harsh times. Once labelled as a wendigo, a person was unwelcome in the community.

"When we ignore our performers, we practice a form of cannibalism and we eat our own," he explained, adding that media corporations influence this pattern by showcasing only foreign music cultures to consumers.

"Artists give us back our culture, and with our help, suppress the wendigo," he said.

And with a superb lineup of artists, whatever your music preference, the festival organizers have designed the weekend so you'll find what you're looking for.

"If you don't like what's on one stage, you can go to another," Sveinson said. The festival is scheduled so different styles will play at the same time on different stages.

The outdoor stage on Friday night will feature local bands with a metal flare— Kristopher Ulrich, Tinnitus, and XEngineX.

Saturday night will highlight a Celtic rock sound and the Sunday evening performance will give you one of the best stage acts around, by rockabilly band The Weber Brothers.

Great music is only just the beginning.

"We have close to 40 vendors from across Manitoba, not including the farmer's market," Marlene Tottle said. She is heading up the planning for the Artisan Square and exhibition grounds, alongside Debbie Woodfine.
