Kingdom Tower: Stunning new images of world's tallest tower in Saudi Arabia
Incredible new images of what the world's tallest tower will eventually look like have been revealed.
The $1.2 billion Kingdom Tower, which will stretch 3,280ft into the Saudi Arabian sky, has so far only been illustrated through concept sketches and a rendering showing the bank-busting building from afar.
But these amazing artist impressions detail up-close what the exterior of the sleek, streamlined tower will look like and how the site will fit in with surrounding buildings.
Gordon Gill, of arhictects AS+GG, said its outline was inspired by the 'folded fronds of young desert plant growth'.
He said: 'The way the fronds sprout upward from the ground as a single form, then start separating from each other at the top, is an analogy of new growth fused with technology. We're thrilled to be working with His Highness to help define this path for the Kingdom.'
The tower has a three-petal footprint and tapering wings which produce an aerodynamic shape that will help reduce structural loading due to wind vortex shedding.
Each of its three sides features a series of notches that create pockets of shadow to shield areas of the building from the sun and provide outdoor terraces with stunning views of Jeddah and the Red Sea.
It will contain 59 elevators, with the quickest travelling at a rate of 10 metres per second, and have a Four Seasons hotel. Prince Alwaleed bin Talal signed a deal to build the tower north of the Red Sea city of Jeddah.
The sprawling mega project, first announced in 2008, will cover two square miles at its base, and will also include serviced apartments, luxury flats and offices. It will stand a kilometre high, occupy around 852 square miles, and is the first building in a plan called 'Kingdom City'.
Bin Talal initially wanted to build the tower a mile high, but abandoned the proposals because he was worried the soil would not support its foundations.
Construction firm Saudi Binladen Group has been given the contract to build the structure, one of seven ambitious projects in the kingdom which is OPEC's top exporter of oil.
The work is intended to diversify the economy from the crude oil that has fuelled the kingdom's growth for years. It also reflects a continuation of the unstated race between the oil rich Gulf nations that are also pumping tens of billions of dollars into job creation and housing for their lower income residents.
In June 2009, KHC signed a deal with Dubai-based Emaar Properties to develop and oversee the construction of Kingdom City and Kingdom Tower.
