Hudson Board of Education Discusses SMART Goal Results for the District
The Hudson School District Board of Education was presented the results of the districts 2010-11 SMART goals at its Aug. 9 meeting held at River Crest Elementary School.
SMART goals is an acronym for specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely. The district set specific goals at for the 2010-11 school year, pertaining to all elementary schools, as well as the middle school and high school.
The SMART goals set for the Hudson High School were:
By June 2011, the number of students in Advanced Placement (AP) courses who represent various subgroups will increase an additional 10 percent from October 2010. By June 2011, the number of ninth grade students considered "at-risk of academic failure" will be decreased by 50 percent. By June 2011, 95 percent of all students will report a positive personal connection to at least one staff member at the high school. The high school did a good job at reaching those goals. The number of students enrolled in AP classes increased by 14.8 percent from October 2010. This increase closely reflected the demographics of the school.
The high school also fared well with achieving the second goal. Teachers identified 32 students who were at risk of failing one or more courses within the first five weeks of the school year.
Hudson High School Principal Laura Love noted that "some of those students identified weren't yet failing, but they were on the downslide already, within the first three weeks of high school."
Of those ninth grade students, 21 of them (or 65 percent) had reduced risk of failure, benefiting from guided study hall.
The only disappointment came from the final smart goal, wherein anywhere from 58 to 74 percent of male students reported a positive relationship with one staff member, and 61 to 77 percent of female students as well, depending on their grade.
Love commented that "the results there aren't as good as we'd like to see." She added that "it could be the way we worded the statement" as the question asked students "there is at least one adult in this school I can talk to who really knows me."
Love also noted that grade level makes a difference in the last goal as well, as "there is an increase by the time they are in 12th grade.
Seventh Grade Math - News

With math, I know they've hired some great teachers." Harrison's highest scores came out of the seventh grade math tests in which the town scored 89.8 percent at or above proficiency. The county average at that level was 70.5 percent.
Middle School math was a strength, with sixth and seventh grades scoring well above state average. 73.8% of the sixth grade and 71.7% of the seventh grade students scored in proficient or advanced. 100% of students who took algebra as an eighth grader
91 percent of sixth grade math students and 92 percent of seventh grade math students demonstrated proficiency in their classes. Only eighth grade math students fell short of the goal, with 86 percent of them demonstrating proficiency in their classes.
Jen Goffena, seventh-grade teacher at Westminster East Middle, used the Algebraic Thinking model with her students last school year. "My students came out of it as better problem solvers," she said. Her students also got a deeper understanding of math
The largest group of Level 1 scores was 6.4 percent of students in fourth grade English exams. The lowest was 1.4 percent in seventh grade math tests. Brewster Superintendent Dr. Jane Sandbank told Patch that school officials will be examining the data

Extra Credit Policy – Extra Assistance – Special Needs
With hard work and effort, every student will be able to succeed in this class and have that reflected in his/her grade. As such, there will never be any extra credit assigned to individual students. Rather, any extra credit that the instructor deems appropriate will be allotted to the entire class. When this happens, students are strongly encouraged to complete and promptly turn in the extra credit, regardless of what their grade is.
Along with hard work and dedication to their daily studies, students are encouraged to seek assistance from the teacher after school and during appropriate open classroom hours. I will always be available for students who may need any added attention to a certain topic or subject. However, it is the student’s responsibility to seek out this help and effectively communicate with me about the need.
If there are any special needs please see the instructor as soon as possible.
Classroom Procedures
Entering the Classroom
Students will wait outside the classroom doors in a line so as not to block the hallway and await the teacher’s permission to enter the classroom.
Bellwork
Upon entering the classroom the students will place the appropriate class materials on their desks and quietly begin working on the bellwork.
Turning in Homework
On most days, while the students are working on their bellwork, they should take out their homework notebook and open it to the page with the assignment so that the teacher may walk around the room and check the homework. On days that the student hands in the homework, the teacher will make special note of it and the procedure for passing in materials will be followed.
Asking or Answering Questions
In order to answer a question that the teacher has posed, or ask your own questions, the students should raise their hand to be called upon.
