After 45 years, Brighton's Class of 1966 finally enjoys its prom

BRIGHTON, Alabama -- In 1966, the United States became more deeply entrenched in the Vietnam War under Lyndon Johnson, Martin Luther King Jr. led a march down Chicago's streets and John Lennon met Yoko Ono. What didn't happen for the seniors of Brighton High School was their senior prom.

Tonight, classmates from 1966 reunited at their 45th class reunion to remedy their loss with a prom of their own with the title, "Our Golden Prom." Many of the classmates hadn't seen each other in years. All were in their 60s. Not all had stayed in the area. Earnestine and Virgie Norfleet had.

Earnestine and Virgie were high school sweethearts in 1966 and married in 1967, and after a brief move returned to stay for more than 40 years. Virgie sat in his house before the prom in a dark tux he rented from Mr. Burch Formal Wear in Fairfield.

Earnestine wore a sparkling sequin dress and some of her more fashionable formal jewelry, her hair in curls. She remembered the sock hops they attended as students before Brighton Bears football games during an era when the school was all black. Virgie and her went together.

"They've grown up," said Mildred Dickerson, a home economics teacher at Brighton in 1966, "so dignified and sophisticated. I hardly recognize them. I'm just so proud."

She and Margaret Beard, a counselor, were the only teachers from the school to attend. Beard remembered the principal, Charles Brown, canceled Brighton's senior prom after a student, who was not from Brighton High School, was stabbed at the dance in 1957 and died.

The school did not have another prom until 1967.

At tonight's "Golden Prom," dark tuxedos with fashionable bow ties were worn well by the men. Vibrant colors and polished jewelry adorned elegant women.

Shirley Sledge, the woman who spawned the idea to have a reunion prom, said she wanted to give her classmates a tradition they missed out on.

"When my daughter had her senior prom, I thought it would be nice for me to have a senior prom," Sledge said.

She said the start of the prom was a little slow, but that things would liven up after the buffet style dinner had finished. The reason? "Because all of us still love to dance," she said.

They danced to the 1960s sounds of the Temptations, Otis Redding, Diana Ross and the Supremes until the party ended.

Brighton's senior class had 238 graduates. Thirty-eight who had died were honored in a prayer at the beginning of the evening.
