ET Review: Lenovo IdeaCentre A320 AIO desktop

NEW DELHI: These days, the rule of thumb is that the slimmer a gadget is, the more it is coveted. Be it a television, computer monitor, mobile phones or laptop, the anorexic look is in and that's what the consumers are going for. With the IdeaCentre A320, Lenovo has implemented the formula to an all-in-one desktop - a design which was never very chunky to begin with.

The A320 is a stunner right out of the box. Although the box in itself seems huge - almost the size of a regular size PC cabinet, the desktop inside is slim and very stylish. The secret to the shockingly-slim design is that the monitor base also hides some components.

The 21.5-inch display has a 1920 x 1080p full HD resolution, white LED indicators and touch sensitive buttons that make the desktop stand out in a crowd. In addition, the bundled wireless keyboard and mouse (white with chrome accents) just adds to the overall look and minimises clutter.

Considering the slim form factor of the monitor, Lenovo has placed all the ports neatly around the base. There are two USB 3.0 ports, audio in/out and a card reader on the left side of the base for ease of access. On the back of the base, there is an Ethernet port, two USB ports, HDMI in and, FireWire and the power connector. Even with the ultra-slim design, Lenovo has managed to incorporate more than the usual set of ports and connectivity options.

Just because it is slim, it does not cut corners with poor hardware. Our test unit came with a second generation Intel Core i3 processor running at 2.1Ghz, 3GB DDR3 RAM, Intel HD 3000 graphics, 750GB storage and Windows 7 Home Premium. It scored an impressive 5.5 in the Windows experience index and ran most applications including hardware intensive ones like Photoshop and Lightroom with ease. Due to the Intel graphics card, gaming performance is limited to slightly older games like Half Life 2 .

What really impresses is the display. It offers vivid colors with superb clarity across videos, games and text. The display can be used as a stand-alone monitor as well with the onboard HDMI-input. The sound-output from the speakers is disappointing in terms of volume level. They are only good for personal listening and although the sound clarity is great, bass is non-existent.

Like most gadgets, this all-in-one desktop also has its share of quirks.

If you have an HP laptop and you are a fan of HP products in general, I recommend you buy an HP USB TV Tuner, which costs about 70$ but it will ensure that you benefit from the full compatibility between the components.  You can do a lot of things using this type of TV tuners, including recording your favorite TV shows. This particular model is compatible with all HP laptop models , but it will also work on other branded laptops.
