Parents Talk: Is There Value in Bending Rules Once In A While?
Toothbrushes, check.
Swimsuits, check.
Sunscreen, check.
My four kids are packed for a week away from mom and dad. They aren’t going to just any summer camp though. This is Camp Grandma.
We drive to my hometown where the kids will spend a week with my 69-year-old mother. She lives in Iowa, but it might as well be Siberia. The culture is a bit different at Grandma J’s.
There’s no Internet, Xbox or even air conditioning.
Bedtime is flexible. Bathing is optional. Wrestling is allowed in the house.
Simply put, there aren’t a lot of rules—which is frustrating to a mother who is trying to keep her children under control. And bathing regularly.
“Rules are for morons,” Grandma J likes to say. “To protect them from doing something stupid.”
Next week I’ll ask the kids what they did at grandma’s, but I won’t expect to get much information. What happens at grandma’s, stays at grandma’s.
But I have a good idea how they’ll spend the week.
They’ll climb her catalpa trees, swing in the hammocks, hide in the giant hollow tree and run through sheets hanging on her clothesline.
They’ll spend hours playing the pinball machine that takes up a third of her living room. There is an ongoing competition between cousins (and Grandma J) for top score.
They’ll tour their uncle’s land on four-wheelers. They might swim in the creek. They’ll go to the county fair. The boys will trade baseball cards with their cousins—they packed a duffel bag-full.
If they get bored, she’ll come up with something. Once she gave each kid a dozen eggs to throw at the side of her house just for fun.
They’ll visit their 91-year-old great grandmother at the nursing home. She’ll get their names mixed up with her other 20-plus great-grandchildren, even though one of my kids shares her name. They'll laugh at the mix-up.
I've realized that the kids will eat differently (read: unhealthy) at Grandma J's. Meals include macaroni and cheese, white bread with jam, Kool-Aid, Happy Joe’s pizza (admittedly, the best) and Grandma J’s root beer floats. They'll eat their weight in buttered sweet corn from Fincel’s, a revered produce stand.
Sugar is a staple at Grandma J’s. When my son was an infant, she fed him a baby bottle full of pop. When I protested, she said, “Oh, it’s not beer!” The baby book said to avoid refined sugar for two years, I’d explained. “That rule is for morons,” was her reply. There it is again.
