TV girl Lucy Verasamy hits Edinburgh to find family fun on a budget

DAYBREAK weathergirl Lucy Verasamy brought sunshine to Leith when she did a quick tour of Edinburgh's tourist spots - on less than £50.

She had the challenge of finding the perfect family day out on a budget.

Lucy, 30, visited the Royal Yacht Britannia, Edinburgh Castle and the Isle of May in the Firth of Forth.

After spending two action-packed days in the capital, the forecaster says it is now her favourite city in Britain.

Lucy said: "Five of the Daybreak presenters were sent to various locations across the UK and Europe, challenged with finding fun family days out for less than £50. I was deployed to Edinburgh and I was spoilt for choice.

"From the minute I set foot there, I knew I was in love, with both the people and the place. There were just so many things I wanted to cram in."

The forecaster, originally from Norfolk, loved the castle saying: "The views are incredible, I could have stood on the battlements all day staring out over the city.

"I watched the One O'Clock Gun being fired by Bombardier Allison Jones, who back in 2006 became the first female soldier to fire the gun.

"She told me how honoured she is to stand in for the district gunner when he is on leave and is delighted to be part of the history of Europe's most famous time gun.

"I also had a tour of the castle itself, which was really interesting and, after chatting to several visiting families, I can truly say it is a great value-for-money experience."

Lucy, who lives in London, also enjoyed her jaunt round the Royal Yacht Britannia and was amazed at how much history was crammed into the surprisingly small boat.

She said: "I always imagined the Royal Yacht was a lot bigger. It's like a floating time capsule and some of the cabins made me feel like I had taken a trip back in time.

"It was lovely seeing some old portraits and natural family photos of the Royal family I had never seen before, which reminded me that the yacht was once their temporary home.

"My favourite Phantom state car that has its own garage on board. It really is a floating palace."

The weathergirl, who says working on Daybreak is her dream job, also headed half an hour out of Edinburgh to visit the Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick.

Lucy also jumped on a high-speed boat out to the Isle of May to see seal and puffin colonies.

She said: "It was a fantastic trip but I have no sea legs and ended up turning green on the way out to the island.
