Monday Open Thread: Olympics Edition
Clearly that was before my time a -tad-…
I lost interest in the olympics with the ridiculous politics. The summer olympics were a bit better but our own media tends to be downright nasty to our athletes. I remember seeing a "human" piece on the local news talking about one of our racers. I can't recall the exact phrasing but it was basically a hit job on a racer chiding him for getting a bronze. (Sometimes I wonder if members of the legacy media are even human!) The final last straw was after seeing a Russian ice skater fall badly and receive higher points than an American girl who didn't. After that, I just didn't care anymore.
Three words- Performance Enhancement Drugs….Kidding… I'm confident that many olympians have integrety and won on their own merits, with team and country spirit.
I'd like to point out something though- Compare Bobby Bonds SF Giants (how many of their superstars were admitted or convicted steroid users) narcissistic top cap players to the world champion team we had last year. The Bay area once again has a winning team to be proud of.

1980 US Hockey Team is the greatest sporting event. EVER.
That being said the USA Womens World Cup is the second greatest. Year of the Woman. What Argentina's men could learn from womens soccer is that you should act like a man and not a woman.
The US Ladies showed me a game I never saw before. Even in a loss the US World Cup Team made me proud.
I'm a Pirate fan and watched Barry Bonds grow from Erkel…………..to the Black Hulkster. Now they probably couldn't find a hat to fit his head. They'll punish him like they are Pete Rose, and he'll never get in the Hall of Fame. I still have a game day program with his signature on it. Its probably worth less today than that TIME magazine up there.
What once began as an event to test the prowess of athletes and to celebrate the very best has over the years degenerated into a political arena. It's not about sports or sportsmanship with the best of the world's best competing in 'friendly" competition. It is now all about politics which has degraded the real meaning of the Olympic games.
I have been fortunate to have seen Olympic games,….
when they were pure and participated by amateurs.

Remeber the Yankees of last year who up to the deadline had the best overall record even though they weren't playing all that well, they made a few moves and added L Berkman,A Kearns,K Wood and to be honest, they went backwards and were not the same
