DVD Review: MST3K Vs. Gamera: Mystery Science Theater 3000, Vol. XXI
Series in general.All five episodes feature series creator Joel Hodgson as host, making this the second set in a row to feature him as the host of every episode included. This breaks with Shout!’s tradition of including only four movies and dividing them evenly between the ones hosted by Hodgson and the ones hosted by his successor, head writer Mike Nelson . But this is a minor because all of the episodes included here came from the show’s fourth season (which was also its third year on cable) when MST3K had started its run on Comedy Channel, newly birthed from the merger of two less successful cable comedy networks, and by then the show had settled into its familiar groove with Kevin Murphy having replaced J. Elvis Weinstein as the voice of Tom Servo and Frank Conniff having replaced Weinstein as TV’s Frank, assistant to Trace Beaulieu ‘s mad scientist Dr. Clayton Forrester (during which time Joel and the Bots started referring to the two affectionately as “the Mads”). The show’s writing was sharper than ever, the performances were consistently hilarious, and the movies were joyously awful and ripe for a prime ripping by the crew of the S.O.L. Without any earlier and substantially less amusing episodes to drag it down Mystery Science Theater 3000 Volume XXI: MST3K Vs. Gamera emerges as the best collection of the show Shout! has issued to date, and while it may not match their terrific 20th Anniversary set from 2008 in terms of extras this set has plenty to enhance your enjoyment of these classic shows.

“You know, these films are weird.” – Joel Hodgson has the monster being woken from an arctic slumber after a plane carring atomic weapons is shot down near its resting place. Editor’s note: At this point Duncan showed me some concept art that Gavin Rothery has done so far for it. I saw a cityscape concept that looked vibrant and very Blade Runner inspired. I saw down the city street and the main character in a raincoat, with his back turned. The other image gave a glimpse of the villians. I saw doctors surrounding a table in a gruesome scene that I don’t want to spoil. If the look of the film does resemble the concept art I saw, then this will surely be something special.
Duncan Jones : Yes he did, he finally did, he watched the film. I managed to catch up with him at something called the BFI, they did a testimonial for him where they were just sort of talking about what an amazing career he has. Then afterwards he basically, there was a VIP lounge and I was able to get in there and say hello to him. I got like thirty seconds of his time and I said, “so did you get to see Moon
Uh, I hope so. I think Sam will be doing it. I know I’ll be doing it and I know Gavin Rothery the concept artist will, and a couple of other people. Hopefully yeah, we need to get Sam on there. So I’m pretty sure that will happen, but there’s some other kind of cool stuff we want to put on their as well so. Yeah we’ll see what we can do.
Do you have a film called Mute your working on?
Duncan Jones : That’s this one (referring to his next project). To be honest, I hadn’t mentioned that name to anyone and then it came out at Tribeca. Someone, one of the people doing the Q and A with me mentioned it and I was like, “oh, how do you know about that?”, but then I realized that the script had just started being sent around in LA. So everyone is going to start coming out about that so (laughs) .
Based on the concept art it seems like you may need a big budget.
Duncan Jones : I’m hoping that we can get twenty or twenty-five (million) which is what I’m going to go for. Which again is not a huge amount, but its no longer indie budget, but its not a Hollywood budget either. Its kind of a middle ground so we’ll see if that works out. Hopefully thats the budget I can bring it in for.
