Main Line notables: Can you name them?

Test your knowledge by seeing how many of these movers and shakers described below you can name. Each paragraph will include some of the most famous aspects of a Main Liner, gained from such historical tomes as Montgomery County – The Second Hundred Years and the Lower Merion Historical Society’s book, The First 300 Years – The Amazing and Rich History of Lower Merion Township. 1. Let’s start off with a personality that almost just every Main Liner will be able to guess. Born in Gladwyne and raised in Ardmore, he graduated from Lower Merion High School in the Class of 1903 as well as West Point. He married Eleanor “Bea” Pool of Ardmore on Sept. 10, 1912. As a pilot he trained with the Wright brothers and became known as the ”Father of the United States Air Force.” He was appointed General of the Army in 1944 and later as General of the Air Force in 1949, being the only man to hold both five-star ranks. He authored three books including “Winged Warfare” in 1941. Need another clue? The home in Gladwyne where he was born now serves as the rectory of St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Still need more help? Both alumni and visitors to outdoor sports events at Lower Merion High School should recognize his last name. 3. While many may recognize the name of American icon and comic book hero Anthony “Buck” Rogers, how many know the name of his creator, who lived in Bala Cynwyd? At the age of 40, this financial editor of the Philadelphia Ledger and his illustrator, Dick Calkins, created the first science-fiction comic strip as Buck Rogers and his female companion Wilma Deering debuted in the August 1928 issue of “Amazing Stories.” The comic strip became so popular that it appeared in more than 200 newspapers. Add to that radio and television series and a 10-minute Buck Rogers film that premiered at the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago. ”Cream of Wheat sponsored the thrice-weekly Buck Rogers radio show with a secret organization of solar scouts who promised to live healthy, obedient, honest and studious lives,” reads “The First 300.” 4. A native of Maine and a graduate of Bowdoin College, this Ardmore resident was beloved by hundreds of students of Ardmore Junior High School. He was the first principal at the school, a position he held from 1923 to 1956. He also established scholarships to honor local men who died in World War II.
