Personal attention, cozy atmosphere part of Albion Heritage Bed and Breakfast ...

Mary Slater and her husband, Richard Lewin, always have enjoyed staying in bed and breakfasts when they travel. In 2003, when their daughter was looking to buy a house in Albion, the couple came across a home that they thought was a good fit for a B&B. After eight months of renovations, Slater and Lewin opened Albion Heritage Bed and Breakfast in 2004. The business opened with three rooms available, and a fourth room was added just a few months later. Shannon Maynard recently sat down with Slater to discuss the business.

Question: What does Albion Heritage B&B offer?

Question: What types of items do you serve at breakfast?

M.S.: We always have some kind of entrée, fresh fruit and juice. Depending on what the entrée is, we may have a side baked item, too. The entrées are, for example, this morning: Belgian waffles with mixed berries and a yogurt topping and bacon. One of (Lewin’s) favorites is called an apple puff pancake. There’s an Amish casserole he makes that has meat, potatoes and vegetables in it. There are egg dishes.

Question: What specials or add-ons do you have available?

M.S.: They have to be requested ahead of time. We offer in-room massage, chocolates and a special snack tray, flowers. You can get various combinations (of add-ons). We will assist you in dinner reservations. One of the newest things that we offer is in combination with Schuler Arts here in Albion. People can come, spend the night here, go to Schuler Arts and fire a raku pot. While the pot is firing, they can work on a wheel and make their own pot. Then the Schulers give them lunch. By the end of the afternoon, the pot they glazed in the morning is ready to take home with them. The pot they made on the wheel can be fired and mailed to them. We do a package with them.

Question: Why did you want to offer those?

M.S.: To give people things to do, especially for people who are more vacation-type traveler or getaway traveler.

Question: What advantages are there to staying at a bed and breakfast rather than a hotel?

M.S.: You get more personal attention. It has a warmer, more cozy, friendlier atmosphere. (People have) the opportunity to talk with the innkeeper and other guests if they want to. And if people want to be more private, they can. We also offer a private breakfast for people who don’t want to eat in a group.
